Any Questions?

Dust Mites: the facts and what we can do to help.

There are dust mites all over your home. Thousands of them, tiny arachnids that can't be seen. They're ugly looking things but they are harmless. They feed on dead skin cells. They love dark, preferably humid environments with lots of dead skin cells. While the insects themselves are harmless their waste is not. After eating the dead skin cells they defecate and that waste contains an allergen. This allergen can cause a number of problems. For many it's simply disrupted sleep, sneezing, irritated eyes and runny noses. For others the allergic reaction can be very problematic resulting in severe asthma symptoms and eczema/skin irritations. Beds and bedding can be hot spots because there's lots of dead skin and underneath the covers it's dark and humid. Carpets can trap a lot of dust mite allergen but it can become airborne when vacuuming. Here's our top 4 tips on how to reduce dust mite allergen problems in your home:

  1. Launder your bedding frequently. Keep the covers pulled back during the day to allow it to ventilate and dry out. Keep the bedroom window open if possible.
  2. Deep extraction clean your carpets. The allergen will become trapped in the cleaning solution that is extracted. Do this annually. Use the best eap filter vacuum you can and vacuum with the windows open.
  3. Reduce Humidity. Generally keep windows open. Try to ventilate bathrooms and kitchens during and immediately after use.
  4. Freezing. Freeze pillows, cushions and soft toys. Allow them to thaw outside on a sunny day and give them a good beating outside before bringing them in again.

Call us on 0800 018 5550 if you'd like to learn more about how we can help to reduce allergens in your home.

Will my carpet get dirtier more quickly after it has been cleaned?

There are very few companies out there who clean carpets properly. If you don't choose a competent and experienced company you're likely to suffer this problem. When carpets are cleaned it's a change in the carpet that causes them to re-soil more quickly afterwards, it's detergent residue that's left behind. All carpets should be thoroughly vacuumed prior to cleaning to remove 80% of the soil which is dry soil. If an extraction method is used they should be pre-spayed with a Woolsafe approved cleaning product if the carpets are wool, and then thoroughly rinse extracted. At ServiceMaster Clean we have a 9 step procedure for deep cleaning carpets.

If you'd like to know more about how to receive the most thorough cleaning possible that will not result in rapid re-soiling, please call us on 0800 018 5550.

Commercial Carpets: special considerations.

Commercial carpets on the whole are more straightforward to clean than domestic carpets. Access can be a problem that needs to be overcome, but a well equipped firm like ourselves is used to these situations. Health and safety is an obvious consideration, slips and trips are a high risk during and immediately after cleaning. Many commercial environments need to look good because the business wants to create a good impression with their customers and/or create a professional environment that sets the tone for what the company expects of its employees. Flooring, including carpeting, is often left to deteriorate and then rescued periodically. Our advice is to put things in place to keep it looking first class all of the time. With a little planning this is not a costly or difficult thing to achieve.

If you'd like to learn more about how we can help you keep your flooring in first class condition call us on 0800 018 5550.

Scotchgard: Is it worth it?

Scotchgard has become the name most people attribute to carpet and fabric protectors. It is of course one of the brands available. Applying protectors to carpet and furniture can be a big con. Cheap and nasty products can be applied that leave the carpet sticky. You can be charged for application when little or no product is applied before. It's important that you deal with someone you can trust when contracting them to undertake this work. Completed properly these kinds of protectors can provide significant benefits.

If your carpet is made of polypropolene application of a protector is a waste of time. If you don't know what fibre your carpet is made of an honest and professional carpet cleaner will be able to tell you. We often arrive at jobs and advise customers that they should NOT have carpet protection applied because they carpet is constructed from polypropolene.

Carpets made from wool or nylon or blends will often benefit from protection. Most upholstery fabrics, apart from dralon and flock, will benefit from protection too. The protection puts a coating on the fibre which repels liquids and oils. So if the item is likely to suffer drips or spills we strongly recommend considering protection. Typically living and dining areas are at most risk and to lesser extent the open areas in bedrooms and studies.

Another benefit of carpet and fabric protection is that it prevents dry soil from becoming as engrained within the carpet or fabric fibre. This makes vacuuming more effective and keeps your carpet cleaner for longer. It also means when your professional carpet cleaner returns, the results will be better.

The protector used by ServiceMaster Clean is called Fabritec and is exclusively available through us. It scores significantly higher than any other protector on the market in terms of its protection against spills and stains. It also has a unique anti-bacterial component which helps you to maintain a healthy home.

If you'd like to learn more about carpet and fabric protectors and specifically our product called Fabritec (containing Hygienilac) please call us now on 0800 018 5550.

How long will it take my carpet to dry? Can you dry clean my carpet?

We recognise that it can be an inconvenience to have your carpets or upholstery professionally cleaned. You have to make arrangements, perhaps clear some things out of the way and after we've left you want the ongoing inconvenience kept to a minimum. The most thorough form and most appropriate form of cleaning is hot water extraction. This will wet your carpets, but usually provides the best results. In order to minimize the inconvenience we use high powered fans to dry the carpets as much as possible. They are not left bone dry usually, but are normally touch dry within a few hours of us completing the work.

You can accelerate the drying by opening doors and windows and allowing a breeze through. Turning up the heating helps a little, but is not really necessary.

If you'd like to know more about our cleaning services and what we can do to ensure you receive the most professional service possible, call us now on 0800 018 5550.

Can I walk on the carpet after it has been cleaned?

You can walk on the carpet after it's been cleaned. It's often better to avoid it if you can. If you leave it to fully dry out in the groomed manner in which we leave it, the pile will remain upright for longer. Sometimes footprints can stick around for a little while on some carpets if you walk on them while they're damp. On the whole however it's no problem to walk on it. If you know you'll need to do this, let us know and we can leave some traffic paper for you to walk on and/or some booties!

You can find out more about our first class cleaning services by calling us on 0800 018 5550.
